I have several small rubber coated flashlights that use 2 AA's, I have dropped them 40+ feet and they still kept on kicking! They were free when registering our Verbatim's from Raco.
 
for whatever reason, I cannot keep flashlights. Well, except for one type. It seems that I never loose the throw away one shot flashlights. I have one that I have had for almost ten years now, still works good. In the mean time, I've lost just about every other kind of flashlight made. weird, huh ?
 
It's a little pricey but i'll never be without one again. A Streamlight halogen / LEd 12 V rechargable. It's great because I always leave the flashlight on and burn out the batteries. I have the base on the dash board and it's always charging so I can kill the battery everyday. The halogen mode is real bright but only lasts about 2 hrs. The LED mode isn't as bright but will last about 8hours. I think I paid $80.
 
I;ve got a lot of flashlights. Old fasioned, rubber coated 2 D cell are the ones I use the most. I've got a couple of small headlamp lights and a couple of mini mags. The mini mags are great when you find a particular lot or brand of lamps that last. I've had some last for months and others that only last for 2 or 3 on off cycles.
 
You want to drop a flashlight 40 feet over and over again, try this. Its $$$, but it will live to tell your tales.

Mag makes a 2-c cell this is in my bag you can buy a 2 watt led lamp for it but this pushes the price to about 40 bucks.

Everyone now is using the led 1" weaver scope mount tactical small 4 color (blue,white,red,green)light this is on my tool belt. I have a pen size led light in my toolpouch.

Last but not least I mounted a head gear headlamp on to my hardhat AND a loose headgear light in my toolpouch. It looks silly but the leds last a long time AND the light moves where you are looking.

When I need extra light terminating control cabinets in hard to get spots I also tywrap the small led tactical light to the side slot in my hardhat for maximum lighting wherever your head turns.

One last trick is use plumbers pvc pipe to sleeve a 3 d cell flashlight with 4 c cells in the same flashlight . The higher voltage really spikes up the light intensity but the bats dont last as long and the whole thing is against the mfgs suggestion for tool use.

I learned this trick from police officers that are friends. Proper lighting is very important for us older guys so money is no object when it comes to this.
 
I like LED lamps for casual dark spaces exploration. Have a Walmart Energizer one, works great. Had the on off switch break on a LED head lamp one time. Left it hanging on my lift for a few days, still glowing pretty good after a few days.
