Hi, I have a situation where there is an existing 4" under ground conduit with 3 #6, 1 #10 GND THHN coming from a service entrance, entering a pull box, and then continuing on to a 60A panel. I would like to reuse this conduit, re-pulling the #6's with additional 3 #1 and a #8 ground from a new 100A disconnect to a new 100A panel (continuing on from the pull box in a new 1-1/2" conduit.) Should I remove the existing #10 GND in the 4" conduit (since I will have a new #8 there)? Do I bond the #10 GND that goes to the 60A panel to the new #8 GND inside the pull box? What would you do? I've calculated that the 90 deg THHN meets the adjustment factor for 6 current carrying conductors, but I'm a little stumped on the equipment ground(s).

Thanks, 480. That's what I thought, but how do I handle the continuation of the feeder on to the 60A panel? It already has a #10 GND. Do I bond it in the pull box to the new #8?

My opinion is that you are required to remove the #10 because all EGCs that run with a circuit have to be sized for the OCPD on that circuit. There is no way to seperate the EGC for the smaller circuit from the larger circuit when they are in the same conduit.

Bob,
Are you saying that you cannot have more than one EGC in a conduit?

You can have as many as you want as long as they are all sized correctly. Same thing as running an undersized EGC wire in EMT. It is legal without it but not with it.

Not likely anyone will call you on it, but that appears to be what the code actually says.
