I am working on a job that is using the 2002 NEC code. I have calculated numerous cable tray overfills in trays designated for single conductor cables above 2001VAC. Some co-workers are telling me that I do not have to include the single conductor equipment grounds we are running in the tray fill calculations. I do not see anything in article 392 that would allow me to do that. Is it acceptable to not include the ground wire in the fill?

I don't see anything that says you don't have to count the ground. But since it won't normally carry any current, or contirbute to heating, I don't see why you would have to include it.

I would tend to give existing installations the benefit of the doubt and assume some AHJ blessed it as installed.
