How would you test a equipment ground? What we do is take a V.O.M and test from the equipment to the steel building which is tied to the grounding grid. MSHA {mine safety health administration] whants us to take a peice of wire from the mcc [which is tied to the same grounding grid as the building]to one lead of a V.O.M then the other lead to the equipment. they say this is to check the grounding conductor in the cable feeding the equipment. But we feel our procedure is doing this, plus checking the grounding grid. So please reply on your thoughts and would like to know OSHA's way they want it done.

I can't answer your question, but back in the late 80's I did some work at a mining facility. We were replacing some antiquated MCCs with more modern equipment. For every motor, we ran a properly-sized equpment grounding conductor which was terminated at the motor and the MCC ground bar, but we also ran a #14 wire. This wire was terminated at the motor frame, but in the MCC, the wire was attached to an insulating fiberglass bar. It made it easy to check the equipment ground - just check with an ohmeter from the ground bar to the #14 wire.

I figured it was just a customer request, but now I see it may have been so that it is easy to comply with an MSHA standard.
