Equipotential bonding for pools

Does the #8 solid bare copper conductor need to be continuous throughout? In other words, I'll be bonding the equipotential grid to the rebar in a retaining wall that is within 5' of the edge of the pool and back to the pool motor equipment which is approx. 40' away from the pool. Does the #8 bare solid conductor need to be continuous? Also, can it be directly buried in the earth or does it need to be housed in it's own conduit raceway? There are three pools at this residential complex so whatever we do for one, of course we'll do for all. Any input would be helpful....:confused:

Does not need to be continuous.

Can be direct buried.
