Good afternoon guys,
I’m curious if my thoughts are reasonable on this. I took a bid class back when I was in trade school. We made a bid up but in that bid, we’d charge for overhead and profit. It would be a percentage of the total of materials and labor. Is this something that is normal in the real world? I don’t know any contractors personally. I’m learning as I go for bidding. I currently charge around 100 an hour when doing work. Maybe even down to 90 an hour. I use mileage fees if it’s over 20 miles. Typically 50 dollars more. I’m seeking guidance on if I’m reasonable or if I’m selling myself short. I don’t charge for the trip there. I feel as if I’m not making as much money I should because I’ve been told other wise. I also do not mark up materials. I’m losing out there because I’m using my gas and time to get the parts.
My question is what are the typical hourly rates? How do you bid a job on how long it will take? And do you mark up materials or add any percentages on to that? Please give me honest feedback even if I am in the complete wrong. Thank you all greatly. God bless and be safe out there in the field!
