For service and feeder load calculations, what's a conservative estimate of the nameplate heater and motor current for a 240V 4-6 person hot tub? I'm budgeting for a possible future installation. The hot tub specs that I've found seem to be providing breaker current rating, rather than full-load current.

Thanks,

John

For "just in case" situations I'd say factor in 10kVA as a worst case scenario.

Most will probably be a less then that but many will probably be in the 6-8 kVA range.

Ive seen several packaged spas with a FLA of 48A. The heater and recirc pumps can run continuously tho from the ones Ive seen the jet pumps are on a 15 minute timer. Tho they can draw 12kw or 12kva, I think your estimation of 10kva is sound.

Spa breakers are sized 125% the FLA. 33-40A will be on a 50A breaker and 41-48A on a 60. Most of that is heating load; the recirc and jet pumps combined pull perhaps 20-30% of that amperage.

The fact that most spa's I have connected require a 50 amp breaker is kind of how I came up with that 10KVA figure. I can't recall ever connecting one that required more then 50 amp breaker, and only a few that required less then 50 amp breaker.
