I am looking for a Residental Estimating Software that will help me compete with other contractor around my area. What will be a good easy one, or will square foot be a way to go if so what are these cost per square foot going for i am in the mass area....... thank

Try "The National Estimator" (TNE).

Easy to use.
Inexpensive.
Integrates with QuickBooks

Here is a thread where we discussed TNE:
http://www.mikeholt.com/code_forum/showthread.php?t=76574

I have been using it for almosyt 10 years - my "current" edition is a bit dated ~ 2004...but it still works :)
I have suggested to a few posters that they try TNE...no one has voiced a negative opinion of it :D

Read the linked thread to find pricing, where to buy, etc.

Charlie, do you mean he has a program that adjusts to his own software or it adjusts to third party software?

I don't think I would buy an estimating program that COULDN'T be adjusted to your needs ;)

No offense to you or Mr. Holt, but at $300+ that's not exactly "entry level"...conversley, TNE at $33 is about as entry level as you can get.

Estimating Software

I use Con Est software. I have found it to be quick and easy. It has all your assemblies built into the program. You just do your takeoff from your print and before you know it the job is done. Add in your labor rate, mark-up precentage, and profit percentage and your are done.

$2325 start-up cost

$33 bucks still sounds sweet

THE is ok for small stuff. I have worked with several of the upper end programs as well as TNE. If you are in a medium sized business then TNE just does not work. For a one man shop it is a good start. The program we use was $6500 several years ago for one user. Once learned it works really well, it pays for itself easily on speed and accuracy.

I agree 100% with you duff...but based on the information in the OP, a large program might be cost prohibitive for him.
