European outlets

In my 30 years in this business it never fails to amaze me what I will find on the next job.
I went to a house which was just recently purchased and the new owner had some concerns about the wiring and wanted it checked out. Besides the usual lampcord wire used like Romex, extension cords run thru the attic etc. I came across a new one for me.
The original owners were from Germany. Apparently they had appliances they brought with them from there. In the house there were 4 outlets of european design. ( Resembles the old 4 wire plug in type phone jacks) with the exception there are 2 small round holes on a european outlet. Having been on a cruise ship where I first encountered these type of outlets I put my tester on it. Sure enough 240 volts. They were wired on a range circuit, dryer circuit and well pump circuit. All were wired with a 3 wire 16 guage appliance cord. The reason I placed this in the Safety section is, ALWAYS TEST UNKNOWN WIRING. The life you save could be your own.......
