I wanted to see what you guys think about this NM box. It is designed to conceal a small plug-in transformer. I see it has a UL listing. I am thinking about using it in my garage to hide a class2 transformer for my sprinkler system. It comes with leads to terminate the transformer and a plastic cover to hide it. I am wondering about proper ventalation and code compliance.

Is that even legal?

Thats what I'm wondering. It's NEMA and UL listed but I dont see how it would be approved judging the opening in the back of the box. Another problem with this is that wire on most plug-in xformers are not permitted to be consealed.

Darn, I thought I was on to something.

That is a cut-in box for mobile homes. It is designed to be installed in a single gang opening in shallow walls. It is not designed or listed for concealing a transformer.

Thank you, I knew something was wrong with it. What is the extra space used for in this box. I wonder how people can get away with selling this illeagal kit?

Edit; I was just at that site and It turns out it's just a picture posting of a guy showing his work. He modified (hacked open) the box open with a dremmel to alow the transformer to fit into it. I thought It was a new box because he showed the listing of the origional carleton box. I guess that transformer of mine will have to stay exposed after all.

I notice NuTone has a similar kit for concealing the chime transformer. Saw it on counter display the other day at the supply house. Maybe it's been out for a while?

Then the NuTone transformer must have CL2 or Cl3 wire on it?
I'll have to look for those. It would be great to be able to hide my ugly transformer.

Carlton, weren't those cigarettes?

Never heard of those, you must be bordering on geezer. :D
Yep, and you're obviously correct about the Carltons. Plus, I spelled it incorrectly.

"Tareyton is better; charcoal is why."

"I'd rather fight than switch!"

what an ingenious way to violate several codes without a care in the world....i wish life was that simple...
