I just completed my Theory and Code Exams for New Mexico and am wondering if anyone can suggest what I can do in preparation of taking the Practical Portion. I am not concerned about the "projects" so much as I am about Materials Identification. I am from Europe and have trouble with English - does anyone know what types of questions will cover Materials Identification? Or a good reference to get the technical names down pat? Thanks for your help - I had to ask my wife to type this for me!

I do not know about New Mexico's Exams . I am immigrant who bacame an American Citizen several years ago. before, I became a contractor/Engineer; I had to take English lessons (ESL) at college level for several years than I went for my college degree.Eventhough, I studied English in Europe for many years before I came to the U.S. It was not enough .Not to judge you, neither to discourage you, with all the respect: If you are not alreay doing so,Have you taking any English courses yet?. It will certainly help you. I see it as the "first" step to a succesful life.
What worked for me in the past; in order to get better with technical names /materials were: reading a lot of technical books with pictures, using internet access for the same purpose, taking a ride to electrical supply houses to see what they had on their shelves to use it as a visual aid. Definitly to work with someone in the field to gain more knowledge and the best suggestion I could give you is: try not to speak your native language untill you get better with your English.
I hope, I understood your question and gave you a few usefull tools. Take care and good luck my friend.

You might gain a lot from the NEC "HANDBOOK", The hardback, fully illustrated version of the code book. "PICTURES ARE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS"!!! especially for us electricians that can't read!
