In mass they have been asking alot of questions on the practical about meters and what they are used for. Example what does a multimeter measure? I haven't spent much time using meters only wiggies. So, if someone could get back to me and let me know the different types of meters like multimeters and megameters and other meters that people can think of. Please let me know there purpose and what each may measure or record.

Thankyou,

Mike from Mass

You should buy one, go to Sears, or Radioshack and pick up a $15 - $20 multimeter.

At the least down load the instruction manual for a Multimeter from one of the manufacturers web site.

Most all Multimeters will read volts, amps, ohms, many can do other things as well.

megger tests insulation. It is a mega-ohm meter or meg-ohm. It looks for high resistance short circuits on (usually) high voltage cable. (NEVER MEG A HOT WIRE!!!).

multimeter tests volts and ohms. When testing for volts you are actually testing for "POTENTIAL" (I just had this question on my exam and I was ready for it). Ohms are a measure of "resistance", or the impedance to the flow of electricity.

ampmeter of course reads amperage (hold or clamp around one conductor ONLY). It is a current transformer, or CT (it steps down current to a very low level that can be measured by a simple hand held, battery operated device).

These are the only meters I really use, but there some who use other sophistimicated stuff like oscilloscopes, etc.

Good luck from New Hampshire!

Dont rely on wiggies I have had them lie to me and you know what happends when that happends, wiggies are good but I would act like somethings hot when using a wiggie or I call them a sniffer..
