Was asked if a tire inflation machine you see at a gas station and a vacuum you see at a car wash need to be gfci protected. Couldn't find answer in code

I would guess it depends on whether they are plugged in or direct wired. Not sure that they need gfci unless the unit is cord and plug

They do need GFCI protection. 422.5(4)
