An apprentice at work took the SC test Sat. He asked me about a question and unless he left some thing out, I can't come up with an answer. He said the question was:

A single phase motor at 15 kw is _____ HP

A. 5
B. 10
C. 15 (I think he said)
D. can't remember

Without V PF I don't know how to figure this one!

Thanks Infinity, I called him and he said he thought D. was 20 HP. I guess he missed it because he said he guessed 10 HP because that was as high as the tables in the NEC went on single phase. (430.248) I think he probably passed because he can find anything in the NEC very quick. He said he skipped the calcs. that he didn't know, and double checked the NEC questions that he did know and spent the last 1 1/2 hour (3 hour test) with the calc's! He's a smart young man so I hope he Done well! He is a very good electrician, so he will be a shining example in our company, hmmmmmmm that may not be good for me! LOL

Good news. I'm sure he was helped by the attitude at work!

The thing I've always remembered is from smaller drives, that say 5 HP / 3.7 Kw.

Some of the other numbers (7.5, 12, 15) are seen frequently but they all work on the same proportion and end up with something hard (for me) to remember. The question is 'a little' strange, as drives are typically sold at 5, 7.5, 10, etc., horsepower, ending up with strange kW numbers on them.

20 kW [5hp/3.7kw] = 27 HP proportion or unitary analysis, whatever...

Also, google converts, typing " 20 kilowatts in horsepower " gives:
20 kilowatts = 26.8204418 horsepower

Yes, it doesn't tell you which ones you actually miss. they break it down into categories like general electrical knowledge, wiring and protection, ETC.Then give you the total number you have right and the number of questions in each category. He said he missed 4 out of 20 on equipment for general use. I'm thinking thats probably calculations. Since that was his weak point.

NC's state exams are computer based and given by Promissor, you know whether you passed or failed and how many you missed ( per category like Hockoligist describes) when you leave the test room.
