Has anyone had any experience with plc based excitation controller. I have received two quotes for the excitation upgrade. One was for a basler Dec's 250, the other was a plc based controller. The plc based controller worries me somewhat because it is not typical. Since the plc is not capable of processing the external I/O the firm is required to supply transducers and modules to make it work. The controller is composed of over 40 parts by different manufacturers when the dedicated controller is 1 part on a printed circuit board. The company uses this as a selling point citing it's modular design and over the counter parts. Does anyone have experience with this type of design?

You mean like an AB 1407-CGCM for a PLC type compared to Basler DEC250N?

I like the Basler 250N. You still end up with a PCL for tying into the company SCADA.
