Existing Exit Signs

This is the situation. We are renovating an old gym and the existing exit signs are recessed in the wall at there perspective locations. Can I use the existing housing of the fixture as a junction box to terminate the connections and mount the new exit sign over the old one?

In the real world I use it but I would make my termination in the new fixture even if I had to re-pull the wire. They could sight 314.29 but it would be a stretch.
