I have a location where the customer had installed a 20 kw diesel generator without a permit appox 10 years ago. They had a problem with their service where they hired an electrical contractor to replace their service, but they failed to go through the roof to give adequate height over their driveway. FPL ( local power company ) did re-connect their service but requested an electrical inspection by the LJHA.

The generator will be a separate issue since it sits too low for the flood plane. They have a service rated transfer switch on the wall next the new meter socket.
Can I just put a 50 A feed/generator service receptacle under the existing transfer switch for a temporary fix to get approvals and the engineering done for a new automatic transfer switch ? I would install a surge suppressor in the load center ( located directly through the wall directly behind the transfer switch ) and have the breakers labeled as which to turn off before attaching/connecting a portable generator and proceed to see if I could find a way to set up load shedding in the future with the relocated 20 kw industrial generator that they have.

I believe the 200 A manual transfer switch they have now would be a legal disconnecting means...
Thanx, dhsvcs
