Should an existing gfi rect.that is three feet from outdoor hot tub be removed or blanked off.Customer insist it should stay because it is gfi and hot tub came after the fact.Don't know what to do just want to make it right tried of arguing. Thanks

Re: Existing outdoor gfi rect.

Sure the outlet can stay, but then they will have to find a new location for the hot tub. :D

680.22(A)(2) requires the hot tub and the outlet to be at least 10' from each other.

And do not forget that after they blank the gfci they must still install a gfci recepticle for 2 reasons 1 the tub requires there be one 10 to 20 feet and if this was the only rear outlet then they need 1 anyways. The way to exsplain this is the tub must meet codes or it can not be added.Try to get them to understand this from a safety point that might save there life.

Re: Existing outdoor gfi rect.

gerry,
Here's another way you could put it. Before the tub came, the receptacle was not a code violation. They're not allowed to create a code violation by placing the tub there. They can either place the tub somewhere else, or move the receptacle.

Re: Existing outdoor gfi rect.

We prewire all day long hey it`s a done deal Get the P.O.after the fact it`s up to others to be code compliant. To say what someone might do is pushing the envelope.

Re: Existing outdoor gfi rect.

Thanks guys for the quick response. In a nice way, I suggested to the customer," I felt uncomfortable with this set up it was not safe so maybe they should have someone else do the job," then there tone changed. Thanks for the support.

Re: Existing outdoor gfi rect.

I really don't even see an argument about it.It simply needed to comply to pass inspection or get a non licensed uninsured handyman to do the job and then when someone gets killed hand it to lawyers
I look at pools and hot tubs this way
take 2 plus people add water 12 pack of bud and electric, now we must hope that safeguards are in place,if not i want no parts of it.
