We have been renovating a house in New Hampshire for a customer to flip. We have removed all the exisiting 2 wire romex and replaced with new. A new kitchen and 2 new baths have been done as well. Customer is trying to save money (go figure) and wants to leave the exsting 100 amp service the way it is.....http://i593.photobucket.com/albums/tt15/kjfelec/IMG_0603.jpgAbove shows the existing set up. Notice the creative way of wiring from the meter enclosure to the panel. The panel was obviously installed recently, we believe by the previous owner himself.http://i593.photobucket.com/albums/tt15/kjfelec/IMG_0605.jpgThis shows the creative wiring. 6/3 romex between the meter enclosure and the panel.*After showing the customer this set up he agreed. We will be changing/replacing this service.
The romex you see in the panel are for temp power to the air furnace, the water heater and basement lighting/receptacle.

I'd say you've got a classic 310.4 violation there.

"in for a penny... in for a pound"

The scope of work you are doing will (in almost all areas) trigger a requirement for *everything* to be brought up to current code standards. (Smokes, AFCI,etc)

You may be able to re-use the panel but everything else are going to have to be done over.

You are right Bryan. We have brought all of the above up to current code.

I would try and sell the upgrade to 200A with the unstable price of NG many HO are going all electric and an A/C unit would be a distinct possibility in the future

Good point Rewire. I have and will try again to sell the upgrade to 200 amp. Customer is trying to get out of this flip as bare bones as possible. He is not really looking to far in the future as far as a new owner would be concerned.

dont forget to leave your name and phone # inside the panel for the next owner

It is difficult to discuss the minimum size requirements for a service, when there are no details of the connected loads.
With that said, the customer at hand is "flipper" and flipper wants a 100 amp service if it is not a noncompliant installation. So be it as long as it is suitable for the connected load. Let the homeowner who follows decide what they may need.

Haha we have small little plaques with the company name and number we put on all of ours. Only ones I've ever seen do it but it's a great idea IMO.;)
