Existing wiring, but extending from it.

Have an installation where SE cable is up in a ceiling (a No No under 2005 or 2008) and it goes to a JB that sits on wall just below ceiling. As this was most likely (assuming here - you know how that goes) been there for the past 8-10 years (based on vintage of building) - can I extend off the JB and add a panel. This 100 A feed used to go to a piece of equipment. So disconnect and flex that was going to machine has been cut back to the JB. It's only a three conductor, so I can only put in a 208V single phase panel, using the uninsulated conductor as EGC?

Oh - and just to make sure - this is in a commercial building with drop ceiling. SE cable is routed up in the steel rafters.

The NEC does not provide a clear cut answer to this type of question.

In my area I could do this, we have a local rule that says we can.

You will need to find out what your area does, did they adopt Article 80 or did they make their own version of it?

Dennis - it's my understanding that neither NMB or SE can be no longer run above suspended ceilings. The SE article refers you to the NMB article.

Celtic - good question. I'll have to call AHJ on Monday.

Thanks

Maybe I'm missing something here...we're not allowed to run Romex above a suspended ceiling? Code article please.

Also, iwire is not Celtic...but that's probably an oversight.

The NEC now prohibits running NM above suspended ceilings in non-dwelling units. Here in MA we amend that and can still run NM above a suspended ceilings

OK thanks. I recalled a job a few years ago where we were allowed to run NM in a commercial space as long as it wasn't a plenum ceiling.

What's Article 80? My 2005 NEC starts with Article 90. I'm going to meet with AHJ on this existing install tomorrow, so I want to understand what's in Art 80 and how it is being enforce locally.
