Exit&Emergency Lt backup power

A customer of ours is looking to change the emergency lights and exit signs in their projects to avoid maintenance on battery backups. They have 125vdc in most buildings, 48vdc in others. They would like to run backup power for these 120vac items directly from their DC. Does anybody know a manufacturer that allows an outside DC source for backup power. I haven't seen this request before as the manufacturer battery backup has always been acceptable until now. Thanks for any help!

Re: Exit&Emergency Lt backup power

I can not see much point in trying to convert the 125 AC into 120 AC.

If you plan to run required emergency lighting from a separate source that separate source has to be ..... well....serperate. ;)

The separate source would need it's on transfer switches, panels, raceways, enclosures and wiring dedicated exclusively to emergency loads.

Re: Exit&Emergency Lt backup power

BOB,
the backup would be from their DC source as opposed to a built in battery backup. they don't want to maintain factory battery backups, they just want to supply the backup power from their 125v or 48v DC batteries. the normal source would be from a 20amp circuit in an AC panel. That won't change.

Re: Exit&Emergency Lt backup power

Is that other DC source powering non-emergency loads?

Then that would be a problem.

There are some ways around it however it would require separate Overcurrent and distribution for that power.
