I am working at an old office building with 15' ceilings. They want the exit lights mounted in those ceilings. Is this legal.

Re: exit light height

I believe that would be a building code issue. I don't think the code talks about exit lites other than in health care facilities and that's pretty brief. Just like location of emergancy lites is pretty much a building code.

Re: exit light height

i have been told by inspector as long as the exit sign is visible it can be mounted at any height. i was in a building not long ago that the exit signs were mounted 12 inches above finisned floor i ask and the reason i was gave was if the building was full of smoke and you had to crawl you could see exit signs

Re: exit light height

The only code I'm aware of that would govern this would be the ANSI A117.1 for accessibility. This is the same code that governs heights for switches, receptacles, horn/strobes, etc... I could not find it. In regards to the low exit signs, I believe there are quite a few states/municipalities that have amendments requiring these, California for example.

Re: exit light height

UBC states "Exit signs shall be readily visible from any direction of approach. Exit signs shall be located as necessary to clearly indicate the direction of egress travel. UBC lists low level exit signs for group A occupancies; located at 6" - 8" above the floor.
