Exit Sign Location Relative to Door

Do exit lights have to be centered in front/above doors they are intended to serve? I am working on an observatory dome project where there is only 2" vertically between the door frame and the rotating dome mechanism, so I was initially thinking to put the light just to the side of the door to avoid both those elements. I am concerned about life safety compliance with the egress door not being directly below the exit light.
