Installing an exit sign in a public school. Does the sign have to have battery backup if there is no emergency power system? There is a battery pack emergency light in the area.

For what its worth, I've never installed one without battery backup.

I've installed them both ways, without the internal battery only if the circuit was fed through an inverter or generator backup. So, every time I've done it, the exits were intended to stay on if normal power was lost. I believe the requirement would be in the building code, not sure what section.

But that's not what this post is about. I just want the "junior" to drop off and become a grown up member.

Exit Signs

Exit Signs

Some states require two exit signs in each location. One at the top of the doorway and another at the bottom so that people crawling out through smoke can still see the exit sign?
As far as safety goes it seems like a good idea to me.

Multiple Exit Signs

In certain states they require multiple exit signs in each location. One at the top of the doorway and a second one down by the floor for people who are crawling out under smoke in the case of a fire.
I think for safety sake it's a good idea?

starsandstripes,

The answer is yes. The code is actually in the International Fire Code. I don't have my copy here right now, so I can't give you chapter and verse, but the absence of a backup power system mandates lighted signs with battery backup AND backup exit lighting (they can be together).

Tim.
