Exit signs and emergency egress lighting? Requirements?

When wiring a public building, where do I find the requirements for Exit signs and Emergency Egress Lighting? Specifically, where they're required, how many are required,etc.

I've looked around in the NEC code book, haven't had much luck.
Is that a Life Safety 101 book requirement? I don't have that book, so not sure!?

Should I assume the plans would have the egress lighting and exit signage that is compliant with Life Safety 101 codes?

If done by an licensed architect/engineering firm, most likely. If in an area where plans must be submitted to AHJ prior to construction for approval, even more likely.

If your area adopts the International Building Code look in section 1006.
