Hi. I have been asked to install exit signs above doors in office bildings. Is there a hight reguirment? Can they be conected to the overhead lighting system that is switched on/ off? I am told his insurance co. is requiring them.

Re: Exit Signs

They are generally installed over the exit door
or to the ceiling just off the door. They must be in a position to be seen. They are attached to an unswitched circuit. Need to have battery back up
in case power goes off. How about the emergency lighting when the power is off? Exit Signs using
LED lights are an energy saver.

Re: Exit Signs

The NEC only covers the wiring that supplies the exit or emergency lights. The requirements for them come from the building offical or building code.
Exit lights are never switched. Bob is correct LED exits are an energy saver, our power utility gives you a rebate of $35 each and the exit lights cost $40. Also emergency egress lighting may be required, known as bug eye lights.

Would the owner consider Self-Illuminating Exits? They're more expensive, but you save cost from labor, conduit and conductors.
