Are you talking about an expansion joint in a concrete slab, or a building expansion joint?

A building expansion joint should be traversed by a flexible connection capable of absorbing the expected deflection. I have seen it done by laying a piece of flex in a zig-zag pattern in some interstitial space to accommodate vertical and horizontal movement.

If I understand what he is asking.
Through a joint.
Usually there is a gap wide enough for a 1/2" EMT.
Some have a key way and will not allow you to go through and others have a full gap all the way through.
Seen this on tilt ups with welded seam plates and gap that has backer rod and sealant.

So through or across?

It’s across the joint. And it’s through the whole building.
