Greetings,

I was registering to take the ICC journeyman exam in NV, and I noticed that one can also register to take a "national standard" exam.

Can someone explain how this national exam differs from a state-specific exam, in terms of recognition by regional authorities? Is the national exam accepted by all states? I imagine the national standard exam refers to the latest version of the NEC (2011) and doesn't include questions related to region-specific code adaptations?

Follow-on question: Do licensing agencies readily accept the test results from an ICC exam taken in one state to issue a master/journeyman electrician card in another state? What about the actual card; will one state offer you a master/journeyman electrician card if you have a card from another state?

Reading from a bulletin that I received in the local county office: "Participating in the Examination Program does not guarantee that a licensing agency will award you a license. However, the ICC Examination Program serves as an independent appraisal of your competency in the construction field and your test results may be used by licensing agencies to satisfy the requirements for testion."

On the ID request form it appears that only local exam results are accepted, and there is not a check box indicating that ID cards issued by other states are accepted. Nonetheless, the form must be submitted to the ICC, not the local authority.

Can anyone provide clarification?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Every local jurisdiction and every state handles this differently. The only way to know for sure what certifications are accepted for licensing and/or reciprocity of certification &/or licensing is to contact the individual jurisdiction.

For example, the Florida ECLB does NOT recognize the ICC contractor / trades certifications exams for licensure. However, the Florida BCAIB does recognize the ICC Certified Code Safety Professional Certification exams for licensure.
