In a lab we are to have a hood in which there will be explosive gas so that the hood itself comes equiped with Class I Div 2 receptacles. We are being told that the area outside that hood should not be considered Hazardous. Also that our contractor is to run the wiring within the hood. The whole things seems rather odd to me. To be on the safe side, it seems to me that at a minimum I should run threaded conduit to the hood and provide a seal at the point of connection to the hood. Has anyone run into a similar situation before?

I am not familiar with hoods in hazardous areas - but your wiring requirements and sealing requirements should be based on the area classification of the room/area as shown on a area classification plan and not necessarily on how the hood is supplied. The area classification will drive the installation requirements.

The basic Standard is NFPA 45, Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals [Referenced in NEC Section 500.4, IN No. 2]
