In replaceing a globe on a flourescent explosion proof light, I have always used chico compound, or similar, but I have been instructed to use silicone instead. Is this a suitable replacement and if not, where would I find it in writing, (nec etc,)?

Re: explosion proof lighting

In the context of your question this is a Section 110.3(B) issue; the Code does not directly address your question.

In the absence of the manufacture's express instructions, I would avoid using sealing compound. It is a listed material and using it as described would be a probable violation of 110.3(B). Depending on the construction of the globe attachment ring, it is possible that no sealing material of any kind in necessary.

Seek the directions of the manufacturer.
