Exposed THHN

Can somebody give me some insight? I recently looked at a job in which the building has exposed THHN ran ~200ft. to a furnace unit. I'm sure this is a violation, but the only references I'm finding are NEC 110-12 (Mech. Exec. of Work) and NEC 300-4 (Protection from Phys. Damage).

Does anyone have a more specific code reference for this wiring method?

Look at Article 300.3(A), and if you have the handbook, read the commentary following that article.

I saw that, but I had a little trouble understanding the "recognized wiring method." The handbook, however, did help!
