extended service

How come when we do an extended service for a single family dwelling, we put a disconnect on the outside with the meter(using ser cable through the attic)? I know thats what we normally do but, today I saw a extended service done in the slab and no disconnect near the meter can. Where in the code book does it talk about services so I can study up? Thanks

Monkey, see 230.70, Service conductors (unfused) in a building are limited to a given length usually determined by the AHJ, feeders (after a disconnect) are not.

Sometimes your in the building sometimes you aren't.

Depends on where the main panel location is. The disconnect has to be immediately(sp) upon entering the building.

the breaker panel is in the garage and the meter can is on the other side of the house. Am I making this more difficult than it is? I am confused.

Monkey, that being the case, you will need to either keep the conductors outside of the house or install a disconnect if you want to run the feeder inside the house to the Panel.

I agree w/Roger and from your OP I imagine that the conduit runs under the slab, this should cover 230.6(1)

so depending on the location of the feeders , inside of the house or outside, lets you know if you need a disconnect or not? Am I right?

Yes, you would be right. But you always need a disconnecting means. Either outside or immediately upon entering the building.

In a multi family dwelling our company did all the service wires were in slab. We still used a dissconect near the meter can. Is there a different requierment for MFD?
