extension boxes

I was called out by an inspector by putting an extension on a 4S deep box, stating that they are not allowed. He did not state the code section and I could not find it. I was not over on wire fill. I just installed the extension box to install (2) flex whips for lighting in a T-bar ceiling. I only had (2) 1/2" EMT conduits going in and out of the original box. Where in NEC can I find this?

110. 3 (a) might be as close as you will come to finding any thing in the NEC.
I see nothing wrong with it.
And even consider it safer since you we're not over on box fill.
Let's see what others say.
That 4s, that's 4" sq deep right?

If you cannot use them then why do they make extension boxes with KO's in them? Ask for a code reference, I doubt that he'll be able to provide one. 314.16(A) even tells us that we can use them.

As long as it's not in the local building code adoption or the building spec's!

This always gets me, you know, if they didn't make it then why could we use it.

I'd call Monday and ask your supplier to mail you a xerox copy of box that it came from.
It will propbably have a UL seal on it!
If you can go see if it has a UL stamp on the ring itself!

Here's Raco's UL - Standards UL 514-A Listed - File E195978. Here

You can find the same using; "box extension ring", on any major search engine.

Good Luck!
