For metal receptacle boxes at the end of flexible cords, generally used as extension cords for temporary connections to cord/plug equipment, do they have to be secured to a piece of wood, in order to be 'listed'?

To be "listed" a product or assembly must pass a certification examination by an approved authority. Typically this is done through a company like Underwriters Laboratories.

To keep the "listing" a product or assembly must be installed in a manner that has been approved and included in the product listing.

Strictly speaking the only box type that can be left 'floating' on the end of a rubber cord is a pendant type box. They are not designed to be mounted.

If you mean a device box like a 'handy' box or 4-square/4s/4x4/190/1900/189/232 box, they are not listed to be used as extension cord ends.
