I am updating an existing GFI receptacle in my garage to 20A and need additional volume to meet box fill calculation. Replacing the current 4" box with 4 11/16 will give me the extra volume required, but will require a fair amount of extra work due to the knock outs not being aligned at the top of the box. (all three are utilized). I am thinking of using an extension ring and converting to a surface mount receptacle. I didn't see anything in the code that prohibits this, but just wanted to confirm. The finished wall is gypsum drywall. Thanks.
