i imagine this is a violation but can't find it in the code book. Can you mount a 4 square extension ring over a flush mounted single gang recep(after removeing the plug)in a wall constructed of combustable material.We are trying to find a inexpensive way to bring the power out and pipe it around the room for more receps. this is just a temp install if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can if you are indoors in a dry location, where chapter 3 wiring methods can be used.(read this as not in a hazardous location.There is a raco 4" sq box with a rectangular knockout in the back the exact shape of a single gang opening. It has mounting holes that fit right over the 6-32 thread openings of your flush mounted outlet box. Its listed for that use. If you need the exact catalog number I can get it for you when I go out to my shop because I have 4 cases of them left from an old job.

These guys beat me to something but you are asking about putting a 4" by 4" extension [two gang] over a single gang receptacle box [involving combustible material].
You should use a single gang extension box such as Steel City [Thomas & Betts] #59361. I'm pretty sure Wiremold makes something for this application.
The concern is that the 4 square extension over a single gang hole will expose the combusable material [wood?] to flame, fire, arcing if something bad happens.

All you have to do is make a joint in the single gang p ring for length and use a sparck guard for the combustiable material,Thanks I learned something today
