Re: extension rings

No, as long as they are installed within compliance to their listing and grounding and bonding is made in accordance to Article 250.

Nope no restricition on amount that cab used,if the situations so many wires in a small box, what i do is take all the wires straight out the original 4 sq and pair the off make my joints so the wires dont get tangled in each other then place extension untill i cover the wire nuts alot of extra work but a clean installation if you ever have to get back in there,is is so sweet

Re: extension rings

if you have to use extention rings..and it is new work, you didn't use the proper box in the first place...most inspectors will turn down the work for not using the correct box...extention rings are for remodels or repairs...using more than one is not a good idea, you should try and replace the existing box if possible...but if you can't, use two....

Re: extension rings

tpwd,
Please cite the code section that an inspector can use to red tag an extension ring used in new construction.

Note that no matter how many extension rings are installed you still have to comply with 300.14. That is the wires must extend at least 3" past the last extension ring if the box opening is less than 8" in either dimension.

Re: extension rings

Don: With the extension rings being removable, does the 3 inch dimension still apply?

Los Angeles code, in the old days, allowed for extension boxes, but did not allow an increase in wire fill from the original box area.

The LA code also did not count the switch ring volume for wire count, box only allowed.

Re: extension rings

Attention webmaster! This post, and many others, does not belong in "AFCI." Perhaps a catecory can be addad for "tips & techniques," or some such thing?

Re: extension rings

tpwd,
I see nothing in any of the sections that you have cited that would permit an inspector to red tag an enxtension ring in new work just because it is an extension ring. Can you be more specific?

Bennie,
In my opinion, the 3" rule applies from the opening of the last extension ring.

Re: extension rings

Tpwd,

I am so glad you will never inspect my work, you sound like a guy who has let his limited authority go to his head.

This type of code enforcement is BS and gives fair inspectors a bad name.

None of those sections you put up would prevent using an extension ring in new work.

Re: extension rings

sounds like the electricians in some area do their own interpreting of the NEC, inspectors will never be out of a job...

Ummm,
sounds like the electricians in some area do their own interpreting of the NEC,
I think in this thread it could look like this

sounds like the inspectors in some areas make up their own rules regardless of the NEC,

Re: extension rings

I too use the make up first and add ext.rings to cover joints,i feel that since they are removable this does really make it alot easier if you need to get into it at a later date.As far as (if you used the right sized box in the first place statement)Isn`t a 4 sq.and a few extention rings alot cheaper than lets say an 8x8 J box.i do this in dropped ceilings and areas not under scrutiny.so think what you like I reap the rewards

Re: extension rings

I can't see anything wrong with extension rings in new work.
I agree with Don that there should be 3" mininum out past the last extension.
With that said, the only time I might not alow multiple rings is in enclosded wall or ceiling or where the depth of the rings would not allow "installation or withdrawl of the conductors without damage to the conductors or their insulation" 300.17. I think I can get away with calling the J box on the end of a conduit as part of a raceway. If it's NM I don't see any limit at all.

Re: extension rings

Does anyone know if there is a problem with grounding as you add more and more extension rings? Possibly listing limitations on the number of rings before effective grounding would be lost??
