Exterior Receptacles off small appliance branch circuits.

I see a lot of exterior receptacles tapped off the kitchen 20 amp small appliance circuits in houses built in the 1970?s and 1980?s. Was that allowed then or was it just overlooked? If it was code compliant when was that changed? I know it is not allowed today. Thank you.

It was once code compliant but I don't remember when it changed.

It was allowed by exception to 210-52 until 1996.
