Hey guys a word of advice if you have a friend who asks you to help them in an extreme makeover house think real hard about it. Or else you could be stuck with a manager who has no clue about deadlines. And thinks you should be able to get an electrical inspection before you have a roof on the house. Ok since im done venting allow me to ask a code question. Due to the nature of this job I have walls that are plywood and then will be sheetrocked. Can I use a cut in box in the plywood and add an add a depth ring when sheetrocked is installed? Also do they make a 2gang cutin box? thanks hope to post pictures soon

there is both a single gang and a two gang plastic extension ring that works
well.

bowers also makes a gangable 3 1/2" deep cut in box, that uses "battleships"
to anchor in the wall instead of wings. far more secure when installed.

and it's deep enough you can actually put a gfi plug or a dimmer in it, with a
wirenut behind it.

you can also just wait and cut them in later, or best yet, cut the plywood,
put a 4sd box in, with a P-ring, and the drywall will fit nicely around that
when they sheetrock.

Use the Carlon Adjust-A-Box pictured below, just flatten out the teeth with your pliers, cut the hole, screw it in place and leave it out an inch so nobody can cheat.

Why not just use one of those front nailer boxes? Cut your hole, slide in the box and screw it to the sheer. They stick out a 1/2", perfect for drywall. They are made by Bowers, part number 118-LBP. They also make multi gang boxes, 2, 3 and 4 gang. Bowers is part of Thomas and Betts.

Hey guys I appreciate the advice. Whereas I know how to wire a building by code I am not super familiar with what products are out there. Now I have a few ideas to go to the big box store with.

Just use an arlington one box or a smart box but you need to find a stud to screw to with these boxes and adjust depth as needed. Good for new or old work. Not found in the big box stores.

So what does this have to do with extreme home makeover? I did one of them in NJ like 3-4 years ago,it was pretty darn interesting.

robwire its a local church event. they chose a house to redo a lot like the tv show. the one we picked has had to have the roof tore off and all of the electrical redone. if you go to youtube and marcus pointe baptist/722 you should be able to find a video for it. We have a week to the reveal and still no roof on the house should be fun. may not be on for a weeek will try to post pictures at some time

Have you seen that in writing or is that just what they expect?

I’ve been told and have a very good repore with inspectors around here. It's never been big enough of an issue to press them on. I talk to them and go over situations and come up with what would be the best way to handle situations that may be sticky. I don't just ask them how to do things. I have an idea of how I'd like to do it and if they have an objection I ask why so I know in case I'm in the same situation and so I know the work around will not present the same problem as my original idea. I've walked into the head inspectors office with a product in my hand and and asked him if I could use it in a situation and explained why I didn't like another manufacturers product that I knew was listed for the application and had him get on the internet and google another manufacturer and email me cut sheets. I don't remember what the situation was about the old work boxes in new walls. We have county inspectors that for the most part are well schooled.
