The IBC and state building codes require at least one manual pull station for most occupancies, however for some, such as limited R-2, you don't need one at all per code.

Does this mean I don't even need a master box at all for these types of occupancies? (not sure if the master box is just another manual pull box).

And lastly, if it is not needed, how do you communicate the trouble/alarm signal from the building to the central station... right from the FA Control Panel?

Thanks!

You will likely need a main control panel regardless of the requirement for the manual pull or not. Even a very minimal sprinkler alarm panel, which only monitors water/tamper switches for the sprinkler system, has a control panel that ties to a central station. There may not even be initiating devices in that instance but there is still a main box.
