The 2005 NEC 310.6 limits unshielded cable to 2400V. Airport lighting cable must comply with FAA L-824 which is 5kV unshielded cable (OK in 2002 NEC 301.6). Airport lighting requires the use a special FAA-approved 5kV cable plugs and series isolation transformers. These systems commonly operate at up to 5kV. If a local, county, or state jurisdiction requires compliance with 2005 NEC (rather than 2002 NEC) in airport lighting wiring, there are no available FAA-appproved materials (other than the cable) that can comply. Is there an exception to the 2005 NEC 310.6 for airport lighting systems for non-federal airports?
