Are all fire alarm systems, in general, required to have battery backup if standby power via generator is not used? I looked in NFPA 72, but I could not find specific verbiage that said something like. ?All fire alarm systems FACPs shall be required to have backup power supplied by battery.? Is there anything out there like that?

Thank you,
Bernard

Yes

It's all in the CODE, this gets very specific to your application, I think you missed it, I not a 72 man, and no point of reference here.

Let's go with the basic's of Emergency lights and egress, 90 minutes for exit signs and a now an egress light per 08', these are battery = back = up!

Are you saying you can't use a generator to supply emergency lights? If so, that is not correct.

Yes, they need back up power, and need a battery even when there is an emergency generator. If there is not a generator the battery needs to supply power to the system for at least 4 hours. If there is no generator the batteries need to supply normal power for at least 24 hours and then be able to power the alarm devices for at least 5 minutes. There are a number of sections of NFPA 72 that apply starting with 4.4.1.3.

No I'm not saying that at all. A generator is free to power all standby or emergency situtions of applying any or all required items that need this power.

I'm sorry to imply anything less than this!

It's still code (08') to supply 90 minutes of exit and egree lighting, how one does this without a generator is with batteries.
