I just installed 6 40ton ac units. 480v 3phase 125amp each. The factory mounted disconect ended up at 7 feet from the roof. I have been told that this it about 5 inches to high . All the that I have read has supported this position . I have also beed told since that diconnect is part of a UL assembly the the disconnect heigth is exempt for the 6'7" rule. You would need a ladder to service this equipment any ways.

Re: Factory Mounted disconnect

IMO the fact that is factory installed does not make it exempt, unless you install a disconnect that is within the code required height you could be red tagged.

Get some PT lumber and make 6 inch high platforms to stand on under each of the disconnects.

Should be cheaper than installing new disconnects.

Re: Factory Mounted disconnect

I think it all depends on the ahj, here our ahj will allow it becuase it is part of the equipment mounted by the manufacturer, we wire amu's that the disconnect is mounted 20 feet in the air, are we required to mount another at 6'7"
I know here I would loose alot of jobs if I had to supply a second disconnect when I know the other guys are not quoting for this.
