Exactly what do these guys do?

I thought that they set standards which other insurance companies go by. But one of my colleagues assures me that they are just another insurance company.

When I look at our master spec, the only place we mention them are in the fire alarm section? Should we be referencing them elsewhere?

Are there standards for manufacturer's or do they have applicable standards for the design of electrical systems?

Thanks,

Mike

If you look at any explosion proof box you'll find a diamond with FM inscribed inside. This is Factory Mutual.

As far as "they are just another insurance company". Factory Mutual insures the largest manufacturing plants in the US. Therefore, regardless of NEC or UL, if their inspectors do not like a device or installation method, then it is removed or the facility is not insured. It is a true case of money talks and ...

I'm waiting for FM to get involved with Arc Flash, as whatever they say or want will become the standard. Another true case of money talks.

Our company is self insured but has FM Global handling things...... I am not sure of the exact relationship. Every large project has FM reviewing the drawings and specifications. We try to abide by their recommendations but do not have to if we have a reason, or do not have the $$$ to meet them. I tell you, these guys are experts on roofing systems! They also have their own electrical recommendations. I ended up in a lengthy discussion with them as they we requiring ground fault protection on a 400 amp 480 volt service.

I've worked in many Factory Mutual insured plants. You need to look for the "FM" logo, within a diamond, on all the material you're installing in such a plant. It's on most of the stuff already, right next to the UL logo. Probably just never noticed it.
