"Fan Beam"

Hey guys, just went on a bid today for a h/o that has a composite ceiling in his pool area. It has 3 "fan beams" where he wants ceiling fans installed. I was just wondering if anyone has come across anything like this. I am relatively new to Florida and have never seen this (working for most of my life in minneapolis area). What is required when dealing these "fan beams" as far as installation (seperate support box?)etc. Just a new one to me, searching for some input. Thanks for any help.

The fan beam is designed for the structural support of the fan. I have ran NM cable thru these beams and done surface installs, it depends at what stage of the game you arrive as to the accessibility of said beam. From your post it sounds as if the panels are in place already? If so good luck fishing them.

Yes the panels are in place, and there is a super gutter between the house roof and the composite roof. There is existing power on the lanai that I will be able to use with box extensions and pipe. But it will be tricky to get up into that fan beam. Just to clarify, again, because this is my first encounter with this, I can mount my fan/bracket directly to the fan beam? No box? Just doesn't seem legal to me.

300.15(A) indeed tells us it is not legal, I never stated you could or should mount your fans w/o boxes!

You could either mount a box just after you get on the beam and fish your cable from there or run your pipe all the way and use a surface box.........It sounds as though you are on the right track!

Are you by chance working with the DrySpace Drain System?

Thanks for all the help. The ceiling is actually an insulated type panel system, with this "fan beam" inside of it, at about 6-7' intervals, I'm not sure of the manufacturer. Just trying to gather ideas as to a proper installation that is still cosmetically aesthetic. I am closer than I was though, so I appreciate all the help!

to the sunrooms we do around here.Hollow aluminum beams . we just fish through them and mount a wiremold box on them (yes wiremold makes a fan rated box)

We've done similar installations. I've never seen a wiremold fan box. You could use any box if the fan is supported independently.

fan box

fan box

I didn't know they made them either picked one up by mistake at the big orange box.Found out when I got to the checkout and saw the price. They are about 12 bucks versus 7 for the non rated ones.We used to use the reguler ones and drill and tap through the box into the beams with 10/24 screws. The rated ones are a real time saver
