Fan box mud ring?

I don't know if they make one, but I have a situation where the easiest thing to do would be add a 5/8 ring to a fan box to be flush with the ceiling, but I guess that would not make it a fan box anymore. They are firring down the ceiling with 1" channel iron to the existing wood joists. The channel is not that suitable to mount the box to, I wanted to mount to the joist. The mounting bracket on the fan box allows me to get it about to the level of the channel but no lower. Will probably have to figure a way to mount to the channel.

Can you use something to mount the fan independent of the box?

Arlington's fan box with a brace has long enough screws that you can fit a 3/4 inch spacer behind the box and still have thread to spare. I use short pieces of EMT.
