Had to do a ceiling fan this week. Had a box on truck for inaccessible locations and replaced the old box with it. Lot of work and crumbled some aging drywall around it. Customer was OK, is having someone paint and patch soon, all over house. But I saw that I need to start keeping a few pieces of 10-32 rod and some hardware for it. Any accessible location, I can run rods right through screw holes and up through a 2x4 over the joists. Would be much easier and less chance of damage. Quick stop by hardware store here soon.

Why would you do all that? How does that meet code and label/listing? Arlington. Has the best setup for old work fan boxes. A few strategicly placed cuts with a saws all makes short work of new work ceiling boxes

agreed. and many ceilings arent accessible from the top. an AI box is always better than going into an attic, even if it's not 140*.

I was already having to go into the attic to run feeds for new lights in same room. Existing box had 4 wires to get loose, was a box on a bracket which I had to pry loose, a lot of work. Cutting bracket with a sawzall would have torn more rock due to vibration.

Independent support is fully legal by code. A quick drilling through of the existing box's holes and running 10-32 rod up to a cross piece would have been much quicker and easier.

That being said, I will look up the Arlington box mentioned. Always good to explore all the options.

I always use to cut a block between the joists and nail it in. Used a standard octagon and used long 3" screws to support the fan. The screws were outside the box. My guys love the new and old work bar boxes made for fans. They hate working in the attic.

I hate that they used old work recessed cans when there is access above but it does save time
