Should a industrial fan have a powercord 35'- 40' long . This is not how it was sold it is single phase 120/208. To me this seems like an accident waiting to happen with such a long cable. I am not sure how long the cable was originally . It is rated for less than 10 amps at 208 and will be station outside in good / bad weather. Can't find anything about doing this in nec . Does anyone have a reason this cannot be changed to a longer cord. This will be moved to different sites when needed.

A permanent receptacle close to the intended place of use is a good idea, and maybe even more so required by other than NEC codes.

NEC doesn't necessarily prohibit this installation - if it meets the requirements for flexible cord usage as mentioned in 400.7 and 400.8.

In my experience, replacing the cord on a piece of utilization equipment is more of a UL issue than an NEC issue. Since one of our largest clients is a government entity that is very strict about everything being UL listed, this has created issues in the past when the maintenance guys do things like replace factory-installed cords with longer ones. Months or years go by, until they decide to remodel an area and somebody higher up the chain notices the modification while inspecting the site. Then they end up having to replace the equipment with something that's properly listed, and somebody in maintenance gets in big trouble.

If the fans are on-site when the Electrical Inspector shows up, he may fail the inspection based on lack of a valid UL listing. I'm not saying that the Inspector would necessarily be right or wrong in such an instance, but I have seen it happen.
