On the side of the fan coil unit is a small switch is that adequate for a disconnecting means? It comes existing from the factory

If I elected to install a disconnect would it have to be fused

On on the nameplate sticker.. it says motor 277 volt 1/3 horsepower. quantity 2. full load amperage 2.6 A

Circuit MCA 5.8 amp
Circuit MOP 15 amp

I really appreciate any guidance that you can give me

The switch is not able to be locked in the open position. See attached image.

That is not so much a problem as it may be a unit switch.

I do perhaps see a problem with it not being clearly marked/identified/indicated as on/ off or open/ closed.

Another problem is I believe that switch may control a relay or such to kill power. It may not directly disconnect the line conductors. 277V toggle switch?

I have seen those used as a disco switch for a low voltage control board on the unit, but not as a line unit disco.

The switch is not able to be locked in the open position. See attached image.

I have to ask if that switch actually disconnects incoming 277 volts? Many switches of that style are not rated for 277 volts. It may be a switch that is part of a control circuit operating at a lower voltage?

NEC does not require locking means on switches that are within site of the equipment. Some safety standards may still want lockable means though.

Some equipment NEC doesn't allow to have remote disconnecting means either, and a motor operated appliance over 300VA or 1/8 HP is one of those items.

We've wired many similar fan coil units with those switches and they do switch the 277. Often they're 2 pole and switch the neutral too.
