Hi, I was asked to hang a fan on a fan rated pancake box with 6 CU volume allowance. There is a 3 wire 14 NM romex there which would exceed the volume allowance. Someone told me that I could still use this as the canopy of the fan would give you the room you need for the extra wire. Is this code complient?

The canopy is supposed to be marked with the volume in order to count the space but if it is not, I doubt even the most strict inspector will bust you on it.

We would use 14/3 AC with a 6 cu in box which eliminates the separate EGC.
